The Biggest Tech Myths People Still Believe
Even in 2026, a lot of old tech advice is still floating around. Some of it used to be true, some of it never was, and some of it just doesn’t apply at all anymore.
One common myth is, “My computer is slow, so I need a new one!” Sometimes, yes! But sometimes, no. Slowness is often caused by low storage, too many startup apps, or outdated software. Those things are relatively easy to fix. But if your computer is more than four years old, you’ve checked storage, updates, and startup programs, and it’s still slow, then it might actually be time for a new device. (But have you tried a reboot?)
Another myth is that more antivirus software means more protection. In reality, running multiple security programs will slow down your system and cause conflicts. One good security tool, regular updates, and being careful online are usually enough.
A lot of people also think that cloud storage replaces backups. It doesn’t. Cloud services help, but they’re not foolproof. Files can be deleted, overwritten, or lost due to sync issues. Having a dedicated, ongoing backup solution can save a lot of headaches.
And finally, Macs can get viruses, too! They’re generally secure, but no device is immune to phishing emails, fake downloads, or bad websites. Staying updated and cautious matters on every platform.
A lot of tech problems today aren’t caused by new technology, but by old assumptions. Updating your habits can make a bigger difference than upgrading your devices😉
