Favorite Holiday Cookie
With the holiday season wrapped up and a new year started, I wanted to reflect on my favorite part of the season. Cookies. We make a decent selection for our holiday events, but one always has my attention: Spritz cookies. These have always felt like more than just a dessert to me. They’re tied to memories of my grandma’s kitchen, filled with the smell of butter and vanilla, the soft click of a cookie press, and trays of perfectly shaped cookies cooling on the counter. And all that leftover dough to eat!
This is one of my favorite cookies and a staple for me around the holidays. I was even able to get our family's original press, so we all get the same shapes we loved so much as kids. We have also found some rarely-used shapes whose desired outcome we still debate to this day. It's fun to pick out the shapes and get started with the press that I can only guess was manufactured sometime in the early 1960s. These cookies are a labor of love.
No matter how many new desserts I try, spritz cookies will always take me back. So much so, they are even worth the effort to make them (all be it only once a year, 😆). They are my favorite cookies around the holidays, and it isn’t one without them.
